Devokan OpenSim OARs for download

Postby Dot » 26 May 2012, 03:44

Edit: If you're having problems getting the OAR files to load, please read through this thread. You might need to gzip them before loading.

----------------
Original post: It's a toss-up whether this thread belongs to the Gallery or the Cross-worlds Project forum. Nevertheless, here are links to OAR files you can download and use in your own OpenSim regions. I've included screenshots to give an idea of the flavour of the regions -- avatars are not included in the OARs, of course!

If we've inadvertently stepped on someone else's toes in any of these builds, do let us know the details, and we'll try to sort it out. Thanks!

A quick clarification -- all the regions were developed by Paislee (as mentioned next to the link to the OAR)

Vandekar and ldinstl_chimera took some of the photos, hence the attributions beneath the images. My apologies for the ambiguity!

Edit: Since it was asked, no, these OARs are NOT for commercial use -- they are for personal use and enjoyment only.

There seems to be a problem with the files, sadly. I've taken them down, and will be doing further tests. I'll post here when the tests are complete and the OARs are made available once more.

Apologies for any inconvenience.

Edit (28 May): The files are back up. If you're having problems, please see Filbert's suggestion below.

The problem seems to be caused by uploading the oar file from the original region server onto the web server, then downloading it to one's home computer and uploading it to the region server where you want to use it.

I tested this by creating an oar file of Deepwater Primordium, transferring it across to the OpenSim instance for my sandbox region, where it loaded without problems -- size: 7.5 MB.

In the same ftp program, I transferred the same oar file across to the web server (different ISP) -- size: 7.5MB.

Using the link above in Firefox, I downloaded the file to my desktop -- size: 12.8 MB. So I guess this might be where the corruption is happening.

Using ftp again, I uploaded this file to the sandbox instance -- size: 12.8 MB. The error message on trying to load the oar starts:
Oar file load errors: System.IO.IOException: Corrupted data ReadInternal...
=====================

I'm testing the last stage, uploading a previously saved different oar from my desktop to the sandbox instance using the ftp program. This oar file is 26.6 MB <trundle trundle... Oh for fast rural broadband> but I plan to use it later...

The ftp program is showing it as 25.3 MB. Now to see if it loads...

It's loading as it should. So the problem step is the download from the webserver, where the file size increased.

So I need to find an alternative delivery mechanism.

Dot I am curious as to which FTP program you are utilizing. Is there a possibility that the FTP program combined with your Virus Software is causing the problem??
I use Filezilla to maintain my web site, and have found that there are times that I need to disable my Virus protection software to upload and download zip and 7s files, or corruption does occur..

You may have just been bitten by the ascii/binary mode problem. Make sure your client is in binary mode before transfering the .oar files.

Thanks, both, for your suggestions.

Wamduskasapa, I'm using Cyberduck, a Mac-based ftp program. Up to now it has worked fine with the OpenSim stuff (for well over a year now).

Filbert, would that help explain the increase in file size?

Investigations are continuing, in between RL work!

I figured it out. Normally, .oar files are 'gzip' compressed. Somewhere along the line your ftp client decided to helpfully ungzip it for you. That would change the file size and corrupt the file as far as the simulator is concerned.

--edit
I just confirmed it with Primordium. You can 'gzip' the file you provide and it will load into the simulator.

I hace a test region running on Windring called Paislee. It is currently using the Primordium oar that has been re-gziped.

Many thanks for this. It suggests that Firefox (on the Mac side in this particular case) is the culprit -- that it is ungzipping the file downloaded via the weblink above. The ftp program transfers it as it should be.

I wonder whether other browsers behave similarly...
=====================

Edit: I've just tried with Mac Safari, and that too must ungzip the file as it downloads, judging by the change in filesize from 7.5 MB to 12.8 MB.
